Review: Myth #1

Artist(s): Sean-Z.

Here’s the first collection of the webcomic by creator Sean Z. Myth is a very gay (and slightly bisexual) erotic fantasy blending magic and science-fiction, with a cast of extremely well-endowed male characters.
At the beginning of the story, a mysterious, large blond man named V’Riel appears on a beach, naked save for a small, glowing ball flying around him, playing advisor and tech support. V’Riel is on a mission: to locate a few people called “The Makers”, the only hope of his world. The threat hanging over him and his world is kept a mystery, and then we cut to a few locales, with porn actors on one side and an underwear/sex party on the other. There used to be a time when world-savers hid in desert or swamp planets…But this is the XXIst century, when everything changes. No, sorry, that’s Torchwood. Ah, Captain Jack. But I digress.

V'Riel and Donjovan

Anyway, back to Myth. One of the fun things about this series is the way magic and sci-fi are mixed together. V’Riel faces a magic-wielding vampire who’s infiltrated the sex party, and the two guys seem to know each other pretty well, if you know what I mean. Sean Z uses fun technobabble, juxtaposed with magical imagery. And giant cocks. This is a sex-filled comic, after all. V’Riel and Donjovan share a bit of the mystery surrounding those characters with the reader, but only the right amount to make us want to know more. And while V’Riel has found some Makers at the party, he also gets his ass handed to him by the dashingly ruthless Donjovan.
While you can read the strip on Sean Z’s site, this comic-sized collection (available from the website) is printed on a thick, glossy paper that showcases the shiny artwork far better than a computer screen (and it’s in an horizontal format that’s unfortunately rare nowadays). The pages are dense, with varied layouts and a lot of dialog, which means it will take longer to read it than the average comic book (and it’s 44-pages long). I think it’s great to see another gay artist doing what he wants on his own terms, and buying this comic will be a good way of supporting him.
