Review: Junkyard Angels #3

Artist(s): Brian Andersen, PK Eiselt, Zachary Enea.

The penultimate issue of Junkyard Angels takes a weird turn by having a crossover with Brian Andersen’s So Super Duper, showing that two rather different stories can bring something to each other.

Jason, who’s still looking for his missing boyfriend, finds himself thrown into the colorful world of Psyche, the superhero empath. Who better than Psyche to give some much-needed hope to a boy whose world is filled with techno-horrors? I must admit that I was skeptical when I first heard that those two series would cross, but writers Eiselt and Andersen managed to make it both contained and significant, which I guess would be the contrary of most mainstream crossovers.

But the whole issue isn’t taken with the crossover. We get impressive double-pages showing Jason and the group of kids he’s traveling with as they face the many-faced monsters roaming the land, as well as more quiet moments depicting the state of mind of the characters, and it’s not pretty.

The back-up beautifully drawn by Juan Fleites also continues, getting even darker than I thought possible, as the protagonist gets to talk to his mother. It’s as tender as Norman Bates’ relationship with his own mother. It’s interesting to see Eiselt writing a true horror story set in the same world as the main story, since that story has some degree of hope, while the back-up is as chilling as possible. That gives each issue a definite balance.

I’m curious to see how Eiselt and Enea will wrap up their story in only one more issue. I don’t expect a happy ending for the world of Jason and the kids, but Psyche would be disappointed if Jason didn’t find his boyfriend.

The Junkyard Angels series is previewed at DoorQ (the prologue and back-up are new to the comic), and you can buy the comic from the authors (see the Facebook page) or from IndyPlanet.
