Week 1 of December reviews on Bluesky

Here are the micro-reviews I’ve posted on Bluesky for the period (various news and links have also been posted):

Sainted Love Vol. 1, by Steve Orlando and Giopota. A fun, sexy, both silly and serious time-travel/gay romance story with NSFW sex scenes. Lots of variety in body types, which is nice.
The energetic, cartoony art is a real pleasure.

Flamer, by Mike Curato. A sharp story about a closeted teen and his struggles with homophobia, with a clever, metaphorical use of Phoenix, the Marvel heroine. The title has clearly more than one meaning.
Beautiful, sparing use of color in a b&w book.

Trick Pony, the 2nd OGN written by Greg Lockard, is drawn by newcomer Anna David in a beautiful, loose style that suits the tale of a rodeo star who returns home. Almost cliched premise is nicely twisted by episodes of magical realism.

Liebestrasse, by Greg Lockard and Tim Fish, is a difficult book to read, as it tells the story of two men in love during the late 30s Germany. Nicely cartoony art and solid storytelling by Fish carry the story very well.

In Restless, Lebanese artist Joseph Kai follows the Beirut life of a young gay man in an homophobic country. The art has dreamlike qualities that contrast with the harsher depictions.

Parallel by Matthias Lehmann is the story of a retired gay German who examines his long closeted life. It alternates between the 80s and the post-WWII period, for a nuanced portrait of a man who had to contend with History.

Another all-audience Gengoroh Tagame comics: a closeted high-schooler into art befriends an older artist who's very out. Themes of generational friendships, homophobia and truthfulness to oneself are handled masterfully.

Gengoroh Tagame also creates comics for a general audience. This one is about a gay Canadian who visits his deceased Japanese husband's twin brother and grows attached to his new-found niece. Very moving, beautifully illustrated.

Hollow Heart, by Paul Allor and Paul Tucker, is a good dark SF comics series with a gay protagonist. Kind of Beauty & The Beast with a more pessimistic take on humanity. See

Sereno, by gay artist Luciano Vecchio, is a well-done superhero/SF comics with a main gay character. Wonderful, dynamic art and a storyline that builds up to something more than the sum of its parts.

The Gay Who Turned Kaiju, by Minamoto Kazuki (tinyurl.com/gaykaiju). A really weird manga were a closeted gay teen turns into a monster. This metaphor for self-internalized homophobia works very well and is intelligently developed.

Maurice Vellekoop's I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together (preview at tinyurl.com/vellekoopglad) is a memoir of his childhood and youth, including self-internalized homophobia and slow self-acceptance. His bright and illustrative art style is a joy to behold.

Forty Lies (preview at tinyurl.com/fortylies), by David Shenton, is an excellent autobiography by a gay comics British artist who knows his stuff. It's also a love letter to his deceased husband, full of human warmth and humor.

Sex Criminals, by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, is a fun romp with more brain and heart than the premise indicates: these people stop time when they have sex. Gay characters become central as the book goes on. Preview comics at tinyurl.com/sexcrim

Edmund White's classic gay novel was transmogrified into a graphic novel by Brian Alessandro, Michael Carroll and artist Igor Karash (preview at tinyurl.com/boysownOGN) back in 2023. A rather languid pace combined with old-school art create a worthy visual version.
