The Mirror of Love
Some time ago, I told you I'd have an announcement about a big project soon. Well, it took some more time than I thought, but here it is (officially announced on the Pulse website): Alan Moore and José Villarubia will collaborate on The Mirror Of Love, a long prose poem written by Moore, with photographic illustrations by Villarrubia. This is the story of same-sex love over two thousand years, and it is definitely one of Moore's best works -and one of his favorite, too. It is lyrical and informative, sensual and archetypal. It was originally written for AARGH! (Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia), an anthology published by Moore in 1988 to protest the infamous Clause 28. It was an 8-page comic drawn by Steve Bissette and Rick Veitch at the time, but the new version will be far longer, although with the same text. I'll write a review of this magazine soon to tell you more about it. The Mirror of Love will be published for next year's San Diego convention. While you wait, you can read the script for The Mirror of Love here. And I'll have a more personal story related to this book to tell you, but that will have to wait.

By now, you probably know how much I love P. Craig Russell's work. Well, I'm very happy to announce a forthcoming collection of some of his short works. This January, Dark Horse will publish:
"ISOLATION AND ILLUSION: COLLECTED SHORT STORIES OF P. CRAIG RUSSELL TP
by P. CRAIG RUSSELL
Since the 1970s, P. Craig Russell (Murder Mysteries, The Ring of the Nibelung) has created some of the most sophisticated and lavishly drawn stories ever to hit comics shops. Dark Horse is proud to present a rare sampling of the work spread over his long career, including early masterpieces like "Dance on the Razor's Edge" and "The Starship Remembrance," along with more recent adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft's "From Beyond" and O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi." If you're a lover of fine illustration and masterful storytelling, these long out-of-print stories are an essential addition to your comics collection. (Dark Horse Maverick title)
On sale January 2
SC,120pg, FC . . . $14.95"
Included in that book will be "Isolation and Illusion", one of Russell's most homoerotic work. It looks like something out of the Renaissance. Here's a picture from that:

Over at Sequential Tart, a generally excellent women-run magazine about comics, you'll find transcripts of the Gays in Comics panel from this year San Diego Comic-Con. First part this month, with the second and final part coming in October. All the panelists seemed to have fun, but that didn't prevent them from seriously discussing issues of interest to gay comics readers.

I've just read a very good interview with Howard Cruse on the Silver Bullet Comic Books site. It's more than six months old, but that doesn't matter. Cruse speaks about the differences between Wendel and Stuck Rubber Baby, artistically and politically. Go and read it.

Maybe you've already heard of Little Sister's, a Canadian bookstore for GLBT readers. They've had a lot of problems with Customs, who seem very keen on preventing certain comics from entering the Canadian territory. The bookstore is fighting that censorship in court. They fight a good fight, which they seem to be winning -although it is far from over- and they need support. More about that in the Pulse interview.
A fundraising book has been published, with people like P. Craig Russell or Howard Cruse donating their work. It is available from the publisher. Buy it!

I already told you about a collection of Clive Barker's Tapping The Vein. The more affordable version ($21.95 for 256 pages) is solicited in the September issue of Previews. If you have any interest in the works of Russell or Barker, you really should get this.

I go away for a week, and more people come and visit this site than ever before. Is there a lesson to be learned? Probably not. The number of people coming here has been steadily growing since it was opened. But I get so little feedback, I don't know what most readers think of it.
You hear me, all of you out there? Sign the guestbook! Write me!
One thing is certain, though. The most visited pages are the Links page -which is nice, the Gallery pages -which is not surprising, and the Boy Trouble page, I assume thanks to the half-naked guy on the cover.
You are all so predictable! But in a nice way, I guess.
Something else entirely: an old work of Howard Cruse, author of Wendel All Together and Stuck Rubber Baby, is going to get a facelift soon. Barefootz, a quirky tale of the 70's, will be made available on the new serializer.net site. This is not a gay strip, but Cruse was doing some really good things with this early work, and one of the main character is gay (a way for Cruse to crack open the closet door). More about that in the Pulse interview.
